Two Goods and a Bummer- First day of School

Today was the first day of school for Tay (2nd) and Robbie (Kinder)

 Second Grade!

All dressed up, hair curled,
and feeling READY for a new year!

Kindergarten!! (which is also called Grade 0)

Grateful Dad could be there for the big send-off

Last year I got in the habit of asking Taylor
to report on her school day by giving me
"Two Goods and a Bummer"

As I picked up Robbie from his first day of Kindergarten
I asked him to share with me "Two Goods and a Bummer"
and following this photo you'll find his response, verbatim!

"Well, Mom, first I don't even HAVE a bummer!
And... two goods...hmm...
One good is that I made a new friend,
but I can't remember his name,
and the other good is...
RECESS!
It was fun cuz I've NEVER had a recess!"

He also reported that they got to visit the school library,
had a total of 5 recesses (!) and he didn't eat all his lunch.

Taylor's report was great too. (Capitalized words show her emphasis)

"The bummer is that TWO of the kids [insert their names here]
that were supposed to be in our class aren't gonna be.
One of them DIDN'T come and the OTHER one
moved to a different town.
My good was... I have GREAT classmates.
Also my good was my teacher is SO nice,
and has a REALLY good plan for EVERY day.
Like she MADE a schedule and we do LOTS of stuff."

She then reported on which days of the week she'll have PE,
who she got to see from last year's class,
and how much she loves being back at school.

And, just bonus, cuz we love him,
Jacob will start preschool in a few weeks,
but he got a photo too!

Jacob got to have a lunch date with Mom and Dad,
and spent the rest of his day with two friends at daycare at our church.
He said it was a pretty good day!

All in all,
truly one for the books!

Heart Over-Flowin'! (and some Quotes)

A big big boy!! You are definitely all boy
-through and through-
loving to be outside, play baseball,
rawr like a dinosaur and scare us with a "boo"

Brother is something I think you've done very well
With the good example your sister set
You have embraced the responsibility whole heartedly
If they need anything you'd say, "You bet!"

Cheeks! People notice your cheeks!
They want to tug and squeeze them.
And what's more is they help to highlight
Your smile and silly grin

Dress up has been an intricate time of creativity for you
As you watched your sister play
You like Clifford, baseball guy, super hero or king,
And Spiderman this past Halloween Day

Energy abounds for you!
That may just be part of being a two year old boy
But let me tell you your volume and busy-ness
Although sometimes hard to handle are truly a joy!

Familiar faces and family
Make you most at ease and comfortable
But sometimes you resort to silliness
Which compared to grumpiness is preferable

Growing up might be hard to do
As changes and transitions come your way
Watching you grow out of little stages can grieve me
But then I smile thinking of your future days

Hickles! "We're all the Hickles!" you shout!
At the dinner table or in the car
You're proud to be one of us
and we're proud you're our son/brother!

Inside activities sometimes baffle you
Your movement and volume can't be contained
But you've latched onto books and coloring and "homework"
And found an extra joy you can gain

Jacob is a special addition to your life
And you have loved him so well!
(And here you still had your beloved 'mi-mi'
to which we recently said 'Farewell'!)

Kindness, tenderness and a sensitive heart!
We see it every day!
Your hugs, quivering chin when you're in trouble,
Your sweet and precious way

Learning new things can feel daunting at times,
But you've begun to step out bravely
And a few times have even jumped into Dad's arms in the pool
And found out you've landed safely!

Music and movies bring a smile to your face
Every time you engage in them
Pixar has given our family a gift
In each of their cinema gems!

Now and then we visit Daddy at the office
where he's studying to be a nurse!
We eat in the big board room there
and then enjoy a candy from the dish of course!!

Outside I see you breathe freedom and fresh air
You get to be as loud and passionate as you want
Tell stories with all the feeling in your heart
And expel your energy on the lawn

Pride and satisfaction filled your heart
When you sorted all the letters by color on your own
Something you chose to do
While Tay was at school and you were at home

Quite a fascination you have with Pumpkin Pie!
You've called it "Cung-cung Pie" since you were a year old
And you'll eat a whole piece and then ask for more
Hot, lukewarm or cold!

Rest is important for people as young as you
But when we transitioned you from nap to downtime
You basically dropped any sleeping out of the equation
And just turned it into one giant alone play time!

Scootering has been a favorite of yours
since before you could steadily walk!
And now you're steady, balanced and fast
And can zoom around the block!

Taylor and you have a special friendship
You're the "big kids, "T&R" and "the biggers"
You are friends, brother/sister, companions, room sharers,
and I love how the bond between you grows quicker and quicker!

Unity is something I've begun to understand more fully
With watching you and your siblings
The differences between harmony and dischord
And how it all affects your feelings

Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and others
Would benefit from a commercial highlighting your phone convos
You're creative, endearing, hilarious and profound
Something your family already knows!

Whatever you do you do it fully!
Halloween cookies were decorated in black
And you whole-heartedly enjoyed them!
But afterwards were in need of a big bubble bath!

X'pectations are something I've learned a lot about as Mom!
When you expect something (like iPad time)
And then we change our minds
You'd think me or your father had committed a crime!
(**Moral of the story? Be sure to check on the kids' expectations
and help them form new ones if they need to!**)

You sometimes get shy- in this pic just camera shy-
And then you'll cling to my leg and hold on to me
I'm happy to be your safe place in this life
And then coax you to let go bravely eventually

Zoos and Hunting stores are a joy for you
As you like seeing the animals (stuffed or alive)
You spot them, watch them, learn all about them
And sometimes, in turn, educate us Hickles five

You're as quotable as they come these days
With quips, clever jokes and profound pray-ings
I've given into the fact that I have to keep a list
Of all your cute and memorable sayings

Some Funny Quotes of Robbie's:

"I see a two! There is another two! A two! There you are two!*So I told him that last one was an "S"*
"Oh!.... Well I call it a TWO!"

Robbie: "Hey!"
Taylor: "What?"
Robbie: "Hey, hey, hey!"

Robbie: "Yup! Hay!"

*I made myself a chocolate banana protein shake*
"Mom, can I have some?"
*No*
"Why? Cuz I'm a widdle kid?
But I'm a widdle bit big Mom!
I'm gonna be a big people!"

*While eating lunch next to Jacob*
"Mom, Jacob is squishing his beans!"
*Think full-on tattle-tale tones here!
I tell him it's okay if Jacob still eats them*
"Why is it okay?
Because if he puts it in his mouth and his teeth will squish it?
So that it can go down into his tummy?
So that it can go between his legs
so he can go peepee and poopoo later?"

*Almost every night around the dinner table
At full voice, full volume, full shout*
"Hey Guys!!!!!
I LOVE you guys!!
I LOVE you guys.... ALL!!
And.... we are ALL the Hickles!!"

*Looking for his sister*
"Tay! Tay....! Tay-wuh!! Tay-wuh-wee!!!"

*Whenever he talks about anything from the past.
We're talking last year, yesterday, or even an hour ago.*
"Last night when.....
I was a baby, this were my baby socks.
Last night when....
Mommy had me in her tummy I kicked her.
Last night when....
I was sleeping in my bed."

*Robbie was playing alone in his room
for over 15 minutes, and it became very quiet.
I went to check on him,
and he had wrapped a ribbon around
the banister to Taylor's loft bed
probably 25-30 times.
I asked him what he was doing.*
"I'm fixin' Tay's roof Mom.
It was broken."
(We had a hail storm in May,
and all of our neighbors had
to get new shingles put on their roofs.
Ours included.)

*Robbie came into our room as we were
just getting into bed. He said he was having bad dreams.
So Greg told him that he can always talk to Jesus.
Robbie walked back to his room,
and three seconds later we hear him,
full loud voice*
"Dear Jesus,
I'm dreaming bad dreams.
Are you gonna help me?"

Nothin' But Love (and Quotes)

I feel so much love for this sweet girl
She's the best date a Mama could ask for!
We chat, we giggle, we talk about her world
I don't think I'd long for anything more!

She's a passionate one
Loves to learn new things
Like how to swim, check! Done!
Next she'll be diving, picking up rings

Her imagination astounds me
When she pretends it's like she's there
Whether doctor, monster or referee
She's whole hearted about the whole affair

Her brothers adore her
They want to be like her in every way
They follow behind like a blur
And she's entertained by it [still] these days

Taylor's an adventurer and risk taker
She lives for adrenalin and rush
She'll likely be the first to break her
bones or fall and get embarrassingly flush

Friends are as important as food
She's an extrovert and social butterfly
People with her brightens her mood
Cousin, neighbor, stranger, girl or guy

Her Montana roots have proven strong
As horses, mountains, bike-riding and snow
Have become her most favorite life-long
Activities as she continues to grow

She's a naturally good helper
And she'll often sing along with a song
As she does chores, picks up or cleans our shelter
Then her brothers easily play along

See her hold her brothers' hands?
Taylor is tender, loving, kind
Tugs on my mama-heart strings and strands
Like nothing else I can find

Her first day of preschool this year
She was excited, nervous, and proud
As she talked about her teacher
Whom she'd greet with "Good Morning" aloud

The four of us walked her to school that day
And she was ecstatically chattering
Backpacks, crafts, ABC's and dress-up play
And then she said something most flattering,

"Mommy, I'll miss you while I am at school,
But I want you to know I'll be fine.
I'll listen to Mrs. Smith and the rules
But you're my favorite Mom of all time."

Mrs. Smith was with Taylor when we picked her up
And you could see they'd had a blast!
When we asked if it'd been a good day she said, "Yup!"
That day had just flown past!

She's girlie and likes to get fancy and pretty
Painted nails, lip gloss, earrings, necklaces and a ring
But even if she was the most decked-out in the city
I pray her humility and love for people remain

Taylor still does a downtime every afternoon
From 1pm to about 3:30 (three three zero)
She plays and she reads or pretends she's on the moon
Then often crashes on her Daddy's pillow

Although seriously contemplating or studying much of the day
Taylor also can be very silly
Sometimes it's monkey faces or Santa in his sleigh
But this day she was feeling quite squidly

Taylor enjoys receiving cards in the mail
So we've taught her it's fun to send too
These are two examples of cousin love sent by snail
It's often random sequences of stories and pretend too

Fearles is a word that aptly describes Taylor Lee
She'll stare a tiger in the face- separated by glass- only inches
She'll swing high at the park or when climbing trees
And look down at rivers when we cross on bridges

Sometimes I look and see my mini-me
Sometimes I see only her Dad
But the true beauty is what God made her to be
To grow more like him, and like us just a tad

Her attitude when faced with adversity is amazing
She missed Halloween because of Chicken Pox
I'm sure God'll use her for some trail blazing
She leads, she tries, she hopes and prays, she talks

She finds pleasure in simple things like cheese fries
And cares for the people around her. She treats
Them with kindness, she's observant and wise
Leaving an impact on every person she meets.

A wise man once told me how people use 'bossy' about girls
But boys are referred to as strong or as leaders
Yes, we'll teach her not to boss around the whole world
But we know she'll be a great influencer or teacher

She's consistent in sharing her heart for others
She cares for them, prays for them, wants them succeeding
Whether friends, strangers, cousins or brothers
She'll end up being a person we see truly leading!

She's passionate, imaginative, forgiving, merciful,
A giver, a choice-maker, an idea girl, our Taylor
She's sensitive, beautiful, observant, giving, faithful
My love for her and hope for her couldn't be greater

She finds picnics in the living room to even be fun
Board games, puzzles, snuggle-up-to-mom movies
When the weather does not allow us to go play in the sun
We will sometimes build forts together and forget all our duties

She's begun to get more artistic and creative when she draws
This evening she drew every member of our family of five
Hair, eyes, mouth, arms, hands and shoes, of course, because
Every one of us must have those things to stay alive!

This Taylor Lee Hickle of ours is truly
A beloved and blessed gift all around
We're grateful for each day God gives us newly
To love on her, and to watch her grow leaps and bounds!

She's a gift and we love her lots and lots
I'm grateful I get to be her Mom!
I pray for her til my stomach unties the knots
and ask God to keep her in his palm!

She has lots to say, this girl of many words,
And I feel like we hear a boat-load
About people, the movies, her books or even the birds
So I wrote down a bit of our quote-load!

Some funny Quotes of Taylor's:

*while driving around town,
running errands in our minivan-
out of the blue*
"Mom, some people are different colors than just peach.
Some are brown and some are white.
And some people have different hair too."

*Greg and I were chatting at dinner
about how a clock was broken
that's way up on a wall of a vaulted ceiling.
She was not a part of that conversation,
but was obviously paying attention.*
"So let me get this straight!
You want ME to climb up THERE
and get that clock fixed?"

*During the post season of baseball
our tv was basically never off
so she heard a lot of baseball commentary,
and also knows we never root for the Yankees.
She was listening to the Christian Radio Station
during her downtime,
and came running out, wide-eyed*
"Mom! Dad!
The man on the RODEO just said
the guy for the Yankees is TIRED!
Is that good?"

(Derek Jeter reTIRED that week! ha!)

*Talking to herself*
"What shall I name my first son?
How about Son-uble,
and my next son will be Basketball."

*She helped a waiter at Red Robin
pick up something that dropped off a neighboring table*
"If someone needs help and I see 'em,
that's when I help them!"

*Looking for a place to sit in the living room*
"I'm gonna sit here on the shoulder."
(the arm of the couch!)

*Giving me a hug around my waist,
let's go and whispers to my belly button*
"Come on out little Sister! You can do it!"
(no- we're not pregnant!)

*As we walked to school one morning*
"Dear Jesus,
please put a little heat around me.
I am cold walking to school."

*With some attitude*
"Mom! Careful!! It's expensive!"
*
I asked her what expensive meant*
"It means REALLY breakable!"

*I went in to wake her from falling asleep
during her down time.
I slipped my arms under her and lifted her
saying, "Time to get up Gorgeous!"
With her eyes still not yet open...*
-Sigh- "Seriously?"
